You’ve chosen a dance class and signed up, woohoo!
Here are some tips on how to make sure your new dance classes are satisfying and fun:
- Show up – I know this sounds obvious but we all know that life happens! In order to get the most out of your dance classes you need to be committed to actually showing up, even on the days that you might feel pooped and low energy. Movement will almost always lighten your mood and help you feel great, trust me, and if you’re wanting to learn a new skill then consistency is key.
- Ask questions – Any teacher worth their salt will love getting questions and being given the chance to clarify anything that the class is working on. I know it can be daunting sometimes to speak up, but most likely if you’re thinking it then others in the class might be too, so I encourage you to ask anyway. Besides, it’s no fun being frustrated if you’re not sure what’s going on, so the easy peasy fun and breezy way to avert that is simply to ask!
- Practice at home – If you have the time, practicing at home can propel your new skills onwards and upwards much faster. Practicing can be just listening to similar music and learning what the rhythms sound like; it can be visualizing any of the things you’ve already learned, repeating them just in your head; it can be doing research on any nuances of the topic, watching videos, etc. Practice does not just mean physically doing the thing on your own time, it’s anything that keeps the juices flowing between classes.
- Relax and enjoy – In the end all dance classes are meant to be fun! Why else would we do them? Nobody cares if you don’t get something right; you are learning a new skill, of course you won’t get it right every time! Have a laugh, enjoy the process.
Good luck!!
